Pakistani cricketer Asad Shafiq has declared his retirement: Pakistan Test batsman Asad Shafiq bid farewell to all forms of cricket as he felt a wane in his passion for the game. Shafiq, 37, announced this decision on Sunday. Following Karachi Whites’ victory in the National T20 Championship, he stated in a press conference, “I no longer feel the same excitement or passion for playing cricket as I did before, and my fitness levels for international cricket have also changed. Hence, I have decided to bid adieu to the sport.”

Asad Shafiq mentioned that he could become a national selector for the Pakistan Cricket Board. He mentioned, I’ve been approached by the board and I’m giving it serious thought. I will soon put pen to paper on this.” It’s worth noting that between 2010 and 2020, Asad scored 4660 runs in 77 Test matches for Pakistan, including 12 centuries and 27 half-centuries. Additionally, he has played 60 ODIs and 10 T20 matches for the national team.
Asad Shafiq became emotional while retiring
Shafiq discussed his decision to retire, stating, “After being dropped in 2020, I continued playing domestic cricket for three years. I had hoped for another success with the Pakistan team, but before the start of this season, I had already decided that this would be my final season. I felt that at the age of 38, instead of waiting for people to ask me to step down, it was better to retire at the right time.
Shafiq reflected on his contribution to Pakistan’s Test batting alongside Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, and Misbah-ul-Haq, under whose leadership he took pride in his role. He recalled the challenging times after the spot-fixing scandal, acknowledging the team’s efforts to regain trust in Pakistani cricket post that incident.
