World Cup 2023: Aiden Markram: In a thrilling match of the World Cup 2023, South African batsman Aiden Markram etched his name in history by scoring the fastest century so far in the tournament. Markram completed his century in 49 balls while facing Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Markram explosive innings included a brilliant innings of 106 runs, which he achieved in just 54 balls. This tremendous performance included 14 fours and three sixes, which helped South Africa post a huge score of 428 runs for the loss of five wickets. This impressive score is now the highest team score in World Cup history.
Notably, the South African team saw three centuries in a single innings, with Markram along with Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen also reaching three-figure scores. By achieving this feat, Aiden Markram broke the old record of Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien, who scored a century in 50 balls against England in the 2011 World Cup. This record-breaking achievement comes exactly 12 years after O’Brien’s explosive innings. Interestingly, both the records were made in India, where the 2023 World Cup is also being held.
Glenn Maxwell is third among the players who have scored the fastest century in World Cup history, he achieved this feat in 51 balls. AB de Villiers is fourth with a century in 52 balls, followed by Owen Morgan, who scored his century in 57 balls.

Markram’s brilliant innings places him at third place in terms of fastest centuries in ODI for South Africa. He left behind AB de Villiers, who previously held this position. However, the top spot for the fastest ODI century by South Africa still belongs to de Villiers, who achieved the feat in just 31 balls against the West Indies in 2015. De Villiers is followed by Mark Boucher, who scored a century in 44 balls against Zimbabwe in 2006.
